Agios Georgios (Korisos)

The most important surviving historical monument of Korisos is the small church of Agios Georgios, which is a good example of folk architecture and preserves interesting folk iconographies. This truncated church, which was washed away by a torrent and still preserves only it’s Holy Sanctuary, is the most important historical monument of Korissos together with the neighbouring cemetery church of Agios Georgios, which was founded later, in 1897.

It preserves in its interior a carved wooden ceiling with painted decoration, a carved wooden iconostasis with painted anthems, a wooden High Altar with an aedicula and an altar door with a representation of the Annunciation and four saints. Frescoes are preserved on the Holy Altar. In the arch, the Virgin Mary is depicted in the heavenly firmament, praying in the way of Vlachernitissa with Christ in an encolpicon, flanked by two reverent angels, while higher up on the upper part of the eastern wall of the Sanctuary, the archangel Gabriel is depicted accompanied by six-winged cherubim, bringing the message of the Annunciation to the startled Virgin Mary. Below the Virgin of the arch is a row of saints inside with niches, such as Saints Hermolaus, Vlassios and the four high priests Saints Basil, Jacob, John Chrysostom and Athanasios.

On the front is a rare painting of the Extreme Humiliation with Christ in the tomb supported by his mother. The scene is flanked by two myrrh-bearing women, one of whom is inscribed as Magdalene.
