Rodani

The “Rodani” was the Easter custom par excellence in the city of Kastoria. It started on Holy Monday and lasted until the day of St. Thomas.

The ‘Rodani’ is a wooden construction in the form of a mill, supported on two large poles. Its evolution is the wheel that we find in today’s festivals. In particular, it consists of the ‘tsietalia’, the ‘drachtin’, the ‘lavdaria’, the ‘styliaria’, the ‘skoularikia’, and the ‘stools’. For Easter, the wood was painted red. Some machalas had “rodani” with two stools and some with four. The “Rodani” was placed in the “megdani” of the machalas. They were set up in many machalas but the most important ones were those of Tsana, Doltcho and Kserichi. It remains an excellent spectacle where young and old are entertained.
