Doltcho

In the old town of Kastoria, in the picturesque Doltcho, among cobbled streets, majestic mansions and flowering courtyards, we find the Doltcho Square, also known as the Square of the Emmanuel Brothers. It is located in the SE lowland area of the city. It used to be the city’s busiest commercial centre and has been associated with the economic, social and cultural life of old Kastoria. The area of Doltcho was the most densely populated area of Kastoria and around the square there were many shops and the market that took place there served the surrounding areas.
Various events were also held in the square. The carnival groups still finish their route there after the parade.
The square played an important role during the years of the Turkish occupation. After 1956 and after the memorial column of the Emmanuel Brothers (work of the sculptor P. Evgenidis) the square was renamed “Emmanuel Brothers Square” to honour the Kastorian Emmanuel Brothers, the first apostles of the ideology of Rigas Ferraios, the visionaries of a free and reborn homeland, who with their enthusiasm, their patriotic fire and their liberal spirit opened the curtain of the great play of the pre-revolutionary period.
